Matariki June

Matariki is the Maori name for the group of stars also known as the Pleiades star cluster or The Seven Sisters; and what is referred to as the traditional Maori New Year. It is marked by the rise of Matariki and the sighting of the next new moon. The pre-dawn rise of Matariki can be seen in the last few days of May every year and the New Year is marked at the sighting of the next new moon which occurs during June.  Traditionally celebrations lasted up to 3 days after the new moon had risen following Matariki becoming visible.

Matariki is a time to understand the history and the importance of the stars for Maori, not only in past but in everyday life.  In the modern day, it means celebrating the unique place in which we live and giving respect to the land we live on.

We held our first school wide Matariki celebration which from 7 - 10 June.  All students learnt about Matariki, name the stars and made kites. We held a fun kite flying afternoon to conclude learning.

Junior School PJ Day May

DSCF8047As part of the Mellons Bay school education outside the classroom programme, our junior school participated in a junior breakfast morning. The main aim was to foster independence and it ties in closely with the 4Cs - growing confidence,m connectedness, communication and creativity. Students came to school in their pyjamas at 7.30am, had breakfast and cleaned up after themselves as well as getting themselves dressed and ready for school. An initiative to donate new flannelette pyjamas to Kidz First was also part of this activity. With the generous donations from parents, the school was able to purchase 62 pairs of pyjamas. It was enjoyed by all. Click here for more photos.
