NZ Curriculum Refresh/Te Mātaiaho
What We've Already Started
We've been hard at work making sure our teaching reflects this new approach.
Aotearoa New Zealand Histories and Social Sciences:
We've already brought this refreshed curriculum into our classrooms. Our students are enjoying rich, meaningful inquiries that celebrate the unique history and present-day stories of our nation.
Learning about Aotearoa New Zealand's histories is now a key focus, helping learners understand our shared past and its impact on our present and future.
Mathematics and Statistics /Pāngarau:
To ensure our students are building strong foundational skills for the future, we've been getting to know the new maths curriculum and have started teaching from it in Years 0 to 6.
English: As we have familiarised ourselves with the English refresh, it has become evident that we are well placed to build on from our established structured literacy approach.
The New Zealand Curriculum is getting an update, and we're excited to be part of it! This refresh, called Te Mātaiaho, is designed to create a smooth and personalised learning journey for every child.
Each phase is guided by the Understand, Know, Do framework:
Understand: Focuses on the key concepts learners need to grasp in each subject area.
Know: Specifies the essential knowledge learners should acquire.
Do: Outlines the skills and processes learners should practise and apply.
Support at home:
The Parent Portal gives parents clear information about what their children will be learning and how they can help at home. We recommend you check this website out.
What is Te Mātaiaho?
Te Mātaiaho, meaning "the strands of learning" in Te Reo Māori, weaves together knowledge, skills, values, and key competencies to create a holistic, learner-centred education system. Grounded in Te Tiriti o Waitangi, Te Mātaiaho fosters inclusive, equitable, and culturally responsive learning for all ākonga (learners).
Phased Learning with Detailed Outcomes:
Te Mātaiaho organises learning into phases, ensuring a seamless and tailored progression for each learner. You can find details about the phases of learning and detailed outcomes for Mathematics and Statistics and English by clicking on the links below:
